Canada renews contribution to GEO

During GEO Week 2018 in Kyoto, Japan earlier this month, Canada renewed their annual CAD$ 100,000 contribution to the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) Trust Fund. This financial support from GEO member countries enables the core activities of the organization.
David Harper, Director General at Environment and Climate Change Canada, said that “Canada is pleased to renew our annual financial contribution to the Group on Earth Observations Trust Fund, recognizing the significant contribution that GEO is making to support a coordinated and comprehensive approach to global issues, such as climate change, sustainable development and emergency management. Canada commends GEO’s ongoing efforts and initiatives to enhance free and open access to space-based and in-situ Earth observation data, as well as science and technology to support global, national and sub-national commitments on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement and the Sendai Framework.”
In addition to the contribution to the GEO Trust Fund, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada is a key contributor to GEOGLAM, GEO’s flagship initiative addressing agricultural monitoring for food security. GEO also notes Canada’s continued in-kind contributions across the GEO Work Programme in activities spanning pollutant monitoring, biodiversity, water quality, human health and ecosystem accounting.
Gilberto Camara, GEO Secretariat Director, thanked the Canadian delegation to the GEO-XV Plenary, saying “GEO welcomes and values all contributions from our Member Countries, both to our Work Programme and to the Trust Fund. It is promising to see continuous engagement and leadership from Canada to support our work. We relish the opportunity to continue working closely together to leverage open Earth observation data, knowledge and resources for environmental and development goals in Canada and around the world.”
