Celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science: WomenInEO

Blog / February 11, 2021

Today GEO is celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. GEO’s mission is to use Earth observations to support a better future with sustainable societies. To achieve this mission, GEO needs to be supported by a global network of scientists, which are capable of working in interdisciplinary problems. Globally, women are behind some of the most groundbreaking discoveries in Sustainability Science. Unfortunately, they  continue to be under-represented in science and face significant barriers to advance their careers. We all have a role in ensuring that women and all underrepresented groups are included, recognised and heard in science. Let's work together to ensure that science becomes truly diverse and inclusive. Join the conversation in advocating for diversity and inclusion in science, not just today, but everyday.

Prof. Dr. Gilberto Camara

Secretariat Director

February 11th 2021 is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, part of the United Nations drive towards achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

We invite you to join our social media initiative “WomenInEO” to celebrate women’s accomplishments in the field of Earth observations, address the under-representation and inequality that women and girls still face today and inspire the next generation of women in science.

Share a picture of you and/or your colleagues on Twitter, Facebook and/or LinkedIn, with ideas on how we can improve the representation of women in our field. Before posting it, include the hashtag #WomenInEO and don't forget to tag the Group on Earth Observations (GEO - @GEOSec2025 and https://www.linkedin.com/company/group-on-earth-observations).

There are also many existing groups on social media to help women in EO, for example @LadiesOfLandsat @WomenCopernicus @geospatialwomen @GeochicasOSM @womeningis @GeoLatinas @africwomeningis

In case you missed the insightful discussions held by Indigenous women from around the world at the “Women Empowerment” session of the GEO Indigenous Summit, you can watch it again here.
