Yesterday, the German Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Julia Klöckner, signed a contract to support the Group on Earth Observations Global Agricultural Monitoring (GEOGLAM) initiative for the next three years. GEOGLAM is an open, global community working to support early warning for emerging food insecurities.
During the signing ceremony Minister Klöckner reinforced the vital role of Earth observations for forecasting the impact of extreme weather events, which have intensified due to climate change and which threaten global food security. Producing reliable and timely crop forecasts with free and open data will be key for averting food crisis.
According to Minister Klöckner, GEOGLAM is “a high-tech tool that is fit for the future and brings us one step closer to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs].”
Mr. Ian Jarvis, the Programme Director of GEOGLAM at the GEO Secretariat, provided examples of GEOGLAM’s implementation around the world, including operational crop assessments at both the global, regional and national scale.
This important agreement between GEOGLAM and the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture, reinforced the importance of strengthening international collaboration through the work of the Group on Earth Observations to tackle the SDGs.
