China provides 2-meter resolution satellite imagery to PICTs

Blog / YE Fanghong / October 28, 2025

A satellite image atlas of the Pacific Island Countries and Territories(PICTs) called "Pearls on the Maritime Silk Road - PICTs in Satellite Images" is available to the GEO community, which has collected 50 scenes of typical images with a resolution of 2 meters from China's natural resource satellites. These satellite images were selected and produced from images acquired in 2019 to mid-2021. The data sources include the ZY3-02, GF-1, GF-2, and GF1-B/C/D satellites, which are in the 500-650m sun-synchronous orbits with orbital inclinations of around 97° to 99°. The revisit time is less than one day.

This collection was jointly presented by the National Remote Sensing Center (NRSCC), the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the Land Satellite Remote Sensing Application Center (LASAC)  and the Ministry of Natural Resources of China (MNR) to provide high resolution images of the urban or natural environment of each PICT and to show readers that PICTs are an indispensable part of the whole global ecosystem and play an important role in creating GEOSS.

In the Canberra Declaration, the need for GEO to recognize the significant capabilities of PICTs and other island countries and to engage these countries with their significant and increasing vulnerabilities to disaster risk, climate change and sustainable development is recognized. Developments in PICTs could be recorded by Earth observation satellites to support the implementation of PICT engagement.

Through regional initiatives, China has provided 2m satellite images of natural resources to PICTs. These images can be used free of charge upon request to the GEO Secretariat or China GEO Secretariat. In addition, the related training courses and capacity building activities are planned to support engagement between PICTs and the GEO community.
