Call for External Advisors

To develop innovative solutions to our most pressing problems, we need a diversity of perspectives. GEO welcomes participation from anyone with an interest in applying Earth observations to real-world problems. The GWP provides a framework for countries, international organizations, the private sector, researchers, and others to work together to harness the power of Earth observations to address environmental and societal challenges. GWP activities have developed several Earth observation-based tools that are having significant impacts in many parts of the world. Some examples of these impacts include preventing famine, providing hazard warnings such as floods and wildfires, and supporting action on biodiversity, climate, and sustainable urbanization. GEO fulfils its mission by promoting open access and sharing of data, information, and knowledge to ensure that the benefits of Earth observations are available to all.

GEO has recently launched the development of its 2023-2025 GEO Work Programme (GWP). For the first time, the GEO Programme Board is inviting volunteers from the GEO community to provide their expertise and perspectives to help improve and shape the plans through participation in several Engagement Teams with members of the Programme Board and the GEO Secretariat. These “external advisors” are expected to provide additional scientific, technical, and/or user perspectives to the implementation plans.

As an external advisor, you will be expected to participate in the following ways:

Provide comments on the plans using an online tool;
Participate in one to three teleconferences of the Engagement Team to discuss the comments from Team members and prepare a consensus view of the Team;
Participate in one to three teleconferences with the leads of a GWP activity and the members of the Engagement Team.

This work will occur between April to September 2022. Please note that there is no remuneration provided by GEO for this role.

The GEO Secretariat will review the expressions of interest and will align the external advisors to the GWP activities based on their expertise and interests. If selected, you will be notified by the Secretariat regarding the timing and details of your participation.
