What is the Youth Track?
This is a series of events throughout GEO Week 2021, where young people from around the world with an interest in GEO activities are encouraged to participate! With the Youth Track, GEO aims to engage the next generation of decision makers, to work together towards a sustainable future.
Through keynote presentations and time for discussion, the Youth Track will lay the foundation for the creation of a GEO Youth Community of Practice (CoP). This CoP will be the place to make connections with the GEO community (including GEO Work Programme activities). It will also provide opportunities for networking and sharing experiences between its members.
Who should attend.
The event is community-driven and participatory. We are therefore looking for enthusiastic individuals who are interested in Earth observations and their applications. The discussions and feedback gathered in the various sessions will inform the CoP’s goals and action plan.
Join the Youth Track and make your voice heard, everyone is welcome! Whether you are a student, intern, early career scientist, PhD candidate or working in a GEO related field and would like to contribute, your participation will help GEO promote youth engagement.
GEO Work Programme activities leads are also welcome to learn more about the youth perspective and join the discussion to contribute their ideas for creating connections, and fostering collaboration.
Where can I register?
To participate in the Youth Track, you need to register for GEO Week 2021. This year, GEO Week will be entirely virtual and will take place on Airmeet. In the week leading up to GEO week, you will be sent a single link to access the Youth Track and other events
What is the programme?
The Youth Track will include 4 sessions over 4 days during GEO Week 2021.
Day 1: Monday, November 22, 11:00-12:00 CET
On day 1, we will hold an introductory meeting in a town hall format. After two short presentations on GEO’s ongoing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) efforts and by the Director of the GEO Secretariat, a discussion will focus on getting to know the audience and brainstorming on how creating a GEO Youth Community of Practice can help engage more young people in GEO.

Day 4: Friday, November 26, 11:00-12:00 CET
On day 4 ,we will hold a wrap-up meeting and the GEO Youth Community of Practice will be officially launched. After a keynote address by an Indigenous Youth representative, the meeting will focus on synthesising the outcomes of the previous days' discussions. Particularly, the feedback gathered during the week regarding what objectives a CoP should pursue will be presented. In order to move forward with an action plan, participants will be divided into breakout rooms to discuss concrete actions for the future. Volunteers will be called upon to take on the various tasks and lead the CoP.
